Biography

‘My work is like real life, a journey into the unknown, sometimes it goes smoothly, sometimes it's a bit rough’

Herold van den Berg (Breda, 1967) likes to contribute to social change with his art. For Herold, art not only reflects where we are as a society at the moment, but also shows where we are going. His work captures his view on social developments.

Herold is a creative mind who does not allow himself to be constrained by the status quo. The work of this experienced sculptor betrays a penchant for round forms. In compositions of mainly steel, resin, bronze, plaster, stone and marble, Herold celebrates diversity. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions in the Netherlands, Italy and the United States.

For Laren, he worked for more than a year on the Monument to Tolerance, unveiled in November 2022. The monument consists of three sculptures called Happy Gerrit®, which Herold now executes in different ways and sizes. They are men leaning against the wall with a mysterious smile, putting a smile on the face of everyone who looks at them. And that is exactly the intention: because Happy Gerrit®'s mission is to make the world a little more cheerful, tolerant and friendly. And we can all use that.
