Biography

"For me, art is meditation, a balance between receiving and actively shaping, a

state where I try to let something pass through me."

For Stefanie Welk (born in Heidelberg, 1972), people are an open system, not clearly delineated from their surroundings. Although we perceive it differently in everyday life, art opens new spaces in her mind that she conveys through her artistic work. Human figures and embodiments are always central in her work, and this is a theme she continually seeks to delve deeper into.

Where Stefanie's figures were once tightly wrapped in iron wire, clearly marked off from their surroundings, nowadays, she allows much more space between the wires. This represents a person who is permanently integrated into various networks, for instance, through exchanging ideas with others or participating in traffic.

With wire as her material of choice, Stefanie makes visible the spaces, vibrations, fields, and movements that are hidden in everyday life behind matter - behind what is superficial, heavy, and solid. In doing so, she uncovers an energetic reality that takes no heed of the boundaries of the body, while the physicality of the human body is also made eminently visible – in powerful movements, which she captures in three-dimensional drawings.
