In Studio Uiterwaal Kroes, the minimalist black-and-white portraits created by Merette Uiterwaal gain an additional layer with the abstract, colourful, and intuitive paintings of Aron Kroes. From the artistic encounter of these two vastly different artists, abstracted portraits emerge for which they often use themselves as models. However, these are not self-portraits. On the contrary, the act of painting over the photographs strips the portraits of a 'self' and brings new identities to life, resulting in a subjective experience of art.
