Biography

"I love to see how a work of art creates itself."

Rust, crumbling walls, and fissures: An Selen (Schilde, 1975) finds beauty in the imperfect, in old materials, and in nature. This is where she finds the sincerity and beauty of a time when life was simpler. Those who follow the course of time will inevitably encounter dents and scratches, and it is these marks that An seeks out in her work.

An trained as an interior architect at the Henri van de Velde Institute in Antwerp. The mindset she adopted there and the less-is-more philosophy that she developed have never left her and are reflected in everything this Belgian artist introduces to the world.

For twelve years, she collaborated with international project developers and architects across the globe. She undertook exceptionally high-end real estate projects in Courchevel 1850 and Mougins with Ehrmann's Partners. Her influence is also evident in Paris, Marbella, Milan, the Hamptons (NY), China, Dubai, and many other places.

An views her art as “a necessary antidote to a world driven by consumption”. For her, creation is an infinite process of growth and discovery. Therefore, do not try to confine her to one style or movement: An wishes to continuously surprise everyone, including herself. Waking up each day already knowing what she is going to create? To her that seems dreadfully dull. It is the variation in her work that keeps the passion she has for creating always alight.

Lightweight concrete panels are her steadfast partner as they satisfy her insatiable appetite for experimentation. Concrete is a natural material that allows An to work organically. She finishes her work with natural pigments. An states, “The concrete panels afford me tremendous freedom to express depth without any constraints.”
