Biography

"I use cracks and fractures to create unique art."

The art of Martijn de Vries (born 1981, Valkenswaard) is not without its risks: should he make an error, it cannot be rectified. Martijn is, in fact, the sole artist in the Netherlands who creates unique patterns in glass through cracks and breaks. He didn't rush this process; in his quest for innovative techniques, he developed a wholly unique method that guarantees a piece of art so singular that it might best be compared to a signature.

Martijn graduated as a graphic designer and has been active in the tattoo industry for twelve years. In addition, he developed his skills as a painter. Tattooing and painting are both creative outlets for Martijn, but he is most innovative with his 'art with a sharp edge.' With utmost precision, he creates at his workshop in Dommelen breathtakingly vivid artworks that offer a new visual perspective from different positions and in varying light. Because the cracks in the glass continuously offer something new, it is nearly impossible to get bored with a piece of Martijn's art.
